RB Industrial Services is proud to be playing a key role in the Gold Coast Sand Bypass Project, awarded in late 2024.
Campaign 1 of the project has involved the design and delivery of both onshore and offshore scaffolding solutions to support encapsulated access for critical blast and paint works to the steel structures located along the Gold Coast’s iconic foreshore and marine assets.
Project scope and commencement
The scope of Campaign 1 required extensive scaffolding to enable surface treatment of structural components under strict environmental and public safety controls.
Onshore works commenced in January 2026, followed by offshore works later that same month.
Both locations presented unique logistical and environmental challenges, requiring precision planning and adaptive methodologies from RB Industrial to meet tight timeframes and safety requirements.
innovative execution and product utilisation
A major enabler of project success was the choice and deployment of the At-Pac Scaffold System, including their latest MPBS (Multi-Purpose Beam System) product. This system allowed for open, uninterrupted working decks, vastly improving productivity while ensuring compliance with high safety standards. The MPBS system also minimized the need for extensive anchoring into the existing steel structure, reducing impact to the asset and allowing for quicker installation and removal.
Our team worked closely with project partners Aqua Blast, Alders Constructions, and the Gold Coast Waterways Authority to ensure access designs complemented the sequencing of blast and paint activities. The encapsulation strategy was carefully coordinated to meet environmental requirements and maintain public and marine traffic safety.

Challenges overcome
The project was not without its challenges. Public interaction along the popular Gold Coast waterfront required diligent planning and constant stakeholder engagement to maintain safety and minimize disruption.
Additionally, Cyclone Alfred and higher-than-average rainfall accumulation impacted schedules, demanding rapid response from site crews and adaptable access designs to keep works progressing safely.
Despite these hurdles, RB Industrial’s proactive approach and robust systems ensured that all scaffold structures performed as required, providing safe and efficient access throughout the campaign.
looking ahead
As we enter the final stages of Campaign 1, RB Industrial Services is working closely with project stakeholders to complete close-out documentation and demobilisation.
With lessons learned and key innovations proven, we are now looking forward to supporting the teams as they prepare for Campaign 2 in the coming months.
At RB Industrial Services, we are committed to Safe, Efficient & Reliable solutions that help our partners achieve their project goals – no matter the complexity or environment.
The Gold Coast Sand Bypass Project is another strong example of our capability in delivering innovative access systems, even under challenging coastal and offshore conditions.
